A currency pair consists of a base currency and a quote currency. All major pairs include the US dollar, crosses do not, and commodity currencies are closely linked to commodity prices.

WHAT MOVES FX

What drives exchange rates.

Exchange rates reflect the relative strength of two economies. The events below often cause notable moves; their release times can be checked in advance in the economic calendar.

RATES

Rate decisions

Central bank hikes or cuts change the yield of holding a currency — a core driver of exchange rates.

CPI

Inflation data

The level of inflation shapes market expectations for the future rate path.

NFP

Employment data

Data such as US Non-Farm Payrolls often trigger sharp US dollar moves the moment they are released.

GDP

Economic growth

Growth data reflects economic fundamentals and influences the medium- to long-term direction of exchange rates.

RISK

Risk sentiment

In risk-off periods, money flows into USD, JPY and CHF; when risk appetite rises, it flows into commodity currencies.
